According to UNESCO, this day has been celebrated since 1999 and aims to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and popularize those languages that are in danger.
The organization explained that World Poetry Day is an occasion to honor poets, revive the oral traditions of poetry reading, popularize the reading, writing and teaching of poetry, encourage the convergence of poetry with other arts such as theatre, dance, music and painting, and increase the popularity of poetry in in mass media.
