Creator knows no bounds

Since the world is the world, man is in constant motion. For Cuban visual artist Michel Mirabal, the topic of migration is an issue that affects all of his world-famous work. This aspect of reality today motivates his latest exhibition, which he will present at the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale, which runs from May 20 to November 26, 2023. System architecture It is the result of a work that the creator started two years ago and brought together the cartoonist with a group of well-known artists, united in the first solo exhibition of a Cuban in this European city.

“This exhibition is full of novelties for me, not only because of the space in Loredan Palace, but also because of the materials and textures that we are going to use. Imagine that we are working with a special effects company, we will use the most modern LED screens, with balloons that will generate the solar system, with indoor lighting that will move, we will create a real cinema, among other things, ”comments He. Jrabout the exhibition, which will include six large-format installations.

The exhibition covers almost all the creative facets of the Cuban artist, from painting, installation, video art, drawing to sculpture. “Yes, there is a photograph missing that we have not yet planned to include, but almost everything that I have done in my career will be there. We wanted to use as much of the resources I have as a means of expressing myself so that people see the phenomenon from different perspectives.

Michel Mirabal first touched upon the problem of migration in 1992 in the series Hands. These were the years of a special period, and everything that happened at that time was a breeding ground for the artistic creativity of a person born in 1974. “I listen very carefully to the stories of the people around me, and it inspires me. I always thought that as an artist I can be international from my country, because issues like migration intersect with all the realities of this world.

“From my work, I try to suggest that tomorrow could be better. I don’t feel comfortable taking the tragic point of view, although it’s perfectly valid, but I’m trying to find a reason to keep going and working and making the world a better place. When someone emigrates, even if he is financially or spiritually successful, there is always sadness in his heart. This is the idea of this exhibition, which tells not only about people who have been marginalized, but also about those who have also succeeded but make no sense,” explains the creator, whose work is part of important international collections.

For this exhibition work, Michel Mirabal has received the support of a creative team, with Cuban curator Nelson Herrera Isla playing an important role, helping to give meaning and drama to this journey proposed by the visual artist.

One of the highlights of the proposal is the video art directed by Alejandro Pérez with original music by Maestro Frank Fernandez. It is an audiovisual product that uses elements of Mirabal’s visual poetics along with real-life images of the world’s convulsive migration processes, harsh realities that testify to the drama that many people endure as they try to reach different places in search of prosperity.

The audiovisual work was recently presented at the National Museum of Fine Arts. The idea, says Mirabal, “is that after this trip through Europe and different parts of the world, we can bring a sample to Cuba and show it to people. The exhibition can mutate and receive contributions from reality over time. I think that the fact that System architecture to come to Cuba, it would be like the completion of the cycle of an emigrant: to leave in order to return one day.

limitless creativity

Michel Mirabal admits that he is fond of drawing. It is in this artistic manifestation that his first forays after graduating from the Higher Institute of Design (ISDi) lie.

“I’ve been drawing since I was a kid and I had great teachers who always told me to use it more,” says the multifaceted artist, whose first job was as a set designer for the Cuban National Ballet and later as a production designer. speed cartoonist at the Cuban Institute of Art and Film Industry (Icaic).

He proudly notes that his main artistic reference is maestro Roberto Fabelo. It is from Fabelo, the National Plastic Arts Award in 2004, that Mirabal holds one of the greatest memories that motivated him to make the leap as a visual artist with his own work. “One day I approached him at his exhibition in Old Havana and asked how an artist could sell his work, and he wisely told me not to worry about selling, but about having a job. The next day I was already working seriously. I focused, and two years later I was given an art scholarship in Venice.”

Returning to this city now, with his first solo exhibition in this European city, means for him a return to where he built his career”, a kind of closing of the circle. While this exhibition at the Venice Biennale did not take place, Mirabal had already accumulated a wide creative repertoire of 11 representative series –Hands, solar interior, Creole Christs, Flags-, which highlights his allegorical works on patriotic elements such as the national flag, making him world famous as the “painter of flags”.

Born and raised in Havana, Key West, Mirabal has become one of the leading figures in contemporary Cuban art, with over 40 solo and over 50 group exhibitions. From his creative space in the Greater Antilles, Finca Calunga, come the most diverse expressions of a work that knows no boundaries and to which he bears witness. System architecture.

Michel Mirabal defines himself as a happy and fulfilled person who gets excited every time he is recognized on the streets of Havana or seen on social media as users share photos of his work such as Cachita, protect all Cubanslocated at Jose Marti Airport. In the same way, he hopes that visitors will share the echo of his proposal in Venice, and also serve as an occasion for reflection on the realities living in the world.
