New greenhouse gas monitoring model approved

A new global greenhouse gas monitoring infrastructure has been approved by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council to reduce the amount of heat-trapping gases that cause temperatures to rise.

WMO has pushed for the urgency of monitoring greenhouse gases in support of improving our scientific understanding of the Earth system, to strengthen the mitigation measures taken by Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.

According to the agency, the initiative requires final approval next May at the World Meteorological Congress. Only in this case will all existing opportunities for monitoring greenhouse gases (space and ground-based observation systems, all relevant modeling and data assimilation capabilities) be used.

According to WMO, there is no comprehensive and timely international exchange of ground-based and space-based greenhouse gas observations or modeling products.
