Report the world’s third cure for HIV through stem cell transplantation

A 53-year-old man treated in Düsseldorf, Germany, has achieved remission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after a bone marrow stem cell transplant, international media reported today.

This will be the third complete remission in the world after this type of transplant.

The research team published a report in the journal Nature Medicine. In 2008, the patient was diagnosed with HIV infection. In 2011, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

The researchers said the patient received an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant more than 9 years ago to treat leukemia.

“Four years after cessation of analytic treatment, the absence of viral recurrence and the absence of immunological correlates of HIV-1 antigen persistence are strong evidence for HIV cure,” they added in the study. Currently, there is no cure for HIV, but each new patient who does not detect and transmit the virus for many years is a new step towards a definitive cure.

In 2008, a medical team in Düsseldorf, Germany, diagnosed this patient with HIV infection and started standard antiretroviral treatment. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a procedure used to treat certain types of cancer, such as leukemia, by transferring immature blood cells from a donor to repopulate the recipient’s bone marrow.

Researchers are cautious about these results because stem cell transplantation is too expensive and invasive to consider using it on a large scale. However, this represents another exploratory step towards finding treatment options for this condition.
