Chinese scientists share new findings on the possible origin of Covid-19

BEIJING, 8 April. Chinese scientists reported today that people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus were able to transmit it to “susceptible animals” at a seafood market in Wuhan, after which other people present at the scene became infected and developed Covid. -19.19, the PL reported.

Tong Yigan, faculty dean of Beijing University of Chemical Technology, told reporters that all animal samples taken on site between January and March 2020 were negative, however, 73 samples taken from the environment were negative. .

The researchers analyzed a total of more than 1,300 samples and found a genetic sequence almost identical to that of the first confirmed patients with Covid-19, the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, he said.

“This discovery suggests that the virus was introduced to the market by human carriers,” Tong said, although he stressed that there is still no conclusive evidence for this hypothesis.

The origin of the Covid-19 pandemic remains undetermined, with some theories pointing to the animal nature of the coronavirus and others pointing to a lab escape. The latter is promoted mainly by the United States.

During a press conference this Saturday, other scientists dismissed accusations that China withheld important information about the first cases of Covid-19 and urged the World Health Organization (WHO) not to allow the issue to be politicized.

Shen Hongbing, head of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, dismissed the statements made by some experts and agency officials on the matter as irresponsible and offensive, recalling that a joint study had determined that the virus had leaked from the lab as “highly unlikely.”

He said that the Asian giant continues to explore this issue from other angles and shared the results with the international community.

Zhou Lei, a researcher at the Center, said the Asian nation is still ready to join forces with the rest of the world to trace the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the research should be extended to other countries.

He stressed that China has always cooperated with the WHO “openly, objectively and scientifically”, twice invited foreign experts to investigate this issue, and since 2020 has published numerous materials and data on public platforms.
