MANZANILLO, Granma. Another great performance by pitcher Ilian Thornes Vargas was key to Granma’s 4-1 victory over Santiago de Cuba this Saturday and retaining the title of the nine-day women’s softball championship in the city.

The star left-hander hit a home run in the first chapter, coming off Jennifer Posena’s aluminum third in the Invincibles’ offensive lineup, but it was the only scratch she could get from her opponents, whom she knocked out 15 times in seven innings of collision.

The Granma team, led by pitcher Ilian Tornes Vargas, won 4×1 against their colleague from Santiago de Cuba today and retained the Cuban women’s softball crown, the national championship of which was held in the city of Manzanillo.

As in the semi-final duel and against the same opponents, the left-handed star shooter once again led the Granma team to victory, bolstered by a well-timed four-hit and three-fault offensive by Santiago’s defense.

To the delight of hundreds of fans who visited Alfredo Utseta Berto Stadium, Thornes barely allowed three hits, including a home run that gave the opponents the only chance.

Thus, the disciples of Rafael García Causa gave the province its seventeenth title in history to confirm themselves as the main victors in these battles; Meanwhile, Guantanamo completed the podium by edging out Villa Clara, who in this case could not count on their main pitcher, Anisli Lopez.

The teams of Holguin and Havana, in this order, settled side by side and closed the final table of positions.
