Bayamo wins Cuba’s Little League title

The Bayamo U-12 baseball team beat Havana del Este 6-2 in the extra-rein to win the Cuban Little League title today.

Thanks to this result, the students of Vladimir Vargas secured participation in the Little League World Series, which is scheduled for next August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (USA).

At the packed Manuel Alarcón baseball stadium in Ciudad Monumento, the locals hit four game-playing runs in the seventh inning after a two-out tie in six regulation chapters.

In that episode, Edgar Torres’ three was key, which combined with a mistake on a shot home, so that the connection served for two goals.

Torres himself, in a supporting role, took the win, making him the MVP of that final, an award that was presented to him at the awards ceremony after the game.

The Capitalists, who were playing for the home club (playing Game 3), managed to come in from behind and equalize twice: at the bottom of the first and fifth, but they failed to take the lead, and this was a decisive factor in the match.

The defeated pitcher was Jons Valdes, who replaced starter William Ferran, who only allowed two tries and was ejected from the box for hitting 85 correct pitches.

Ismael Ortega started for Bayamo in great form but faltered in the fifth inning in which he left the bases loaded with one strikeout and a 2-2 lead.

“This is a triumph for many people, in these categories parents are fundamental to everything they contribute. Now we will have to prepare very hard to represent Cuba with dignity,” said Vladimir Vargas Verdesia, technical director of the champions, who also led Bayamo to the title three years ago.

The Bayans have an impressive record in the Little League tournaments: title (2020), second place (2022) and crown in 2023. In total, they have 22 wins and only four losses in three tournaments in this tournament. : 8-0 in 2020, 6-2 in 2022 and 8-2 in 2023.
