Former athlete, multiple champion of the continent and the Central Caribbean, Angel Fournier Rodriguez, Cuban sports star, died on March 16 as a result of a heart attack.

Born on December 31, 1987, a native of the municipality of Guantanamo in Caymaner, has been the island’s main figure in the solo skating modality for many years.

Among his main achievements are two silver medals (Jinju 2013 and Sarasota 2017) and bronze (Amsterdam 2014) at the world championships, and he has also won medals in all colors at various world cups in this discipline.

Along with these medals, Fournier had the honor of participating in three Olympic Games in singles. He made his debut in 2008 in Beijing where he placed 12th and did not reach the final. However, four years later, in London in 2012, he finished seventh, and in his last appearance in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, he improved his result by finishing sixth in the same competition.

In addition, he won four Pan American titles: one in Guadalajara in 2011, two in Toronto in 2015 (single and double sculls; he also took silver in quadruple sculls) and another in Lima 2019, the last multi-sport match in which he participated. defending the colors of Major of the Antilles.

After requesting to retire from the national team in 2020, Ángel, who was diagnosed with heart problems, settled in the United States, the country where he has lived ever since.
