The International Football Federation (FIFA) on Wednesday withdrew Indonesia’s status as host nation of this year’s U-20 World Cup and announced it would announce a new host as soon as possible.
The body governing world football indicated in a statement that the decision came after a meeting in Geneva between its president, Gianni Infantino; and his colleague in Indonesia, Eric Tohir.
FIFA added that the dates of the tournaments will not be changed (from May 20 to June 11) and possible sanctions against the Asian Federation will be analyzed.
The planetary organization has given this nation the privilege as part of its plan to transform national football following the stadium tragedy in October 2022 that killed over 170 people.
However, opposition expressed in Indonesia to Israel’s participation led to a change in venue.
Last Sunday, FIFA canceled the World Cup draw after learning of a letter from Bali Governor Wayan Koster asking Israel to veto the world competition.
