Lefty Artemiza made history this Monday. Author: Mikel Espinosa Rodriguez
Too much for one day. Save Cuban baseball’s historic date of April 17: the second perfect game in the history of the national series and two consecutive superknockouts. Artemisa as a team and southpaw Geonel Gutierrez individually were the protagonists of the feat against Industriales.
The game ended early, just five innings away, under the extreme mercy rule, after the Hunters stepped on the rubber 16 times.
With this array of arrows pierced into the dying body of a defenseless and confused blue cat, an unprecedented event has already been signed as the Super KO 47 and 48 arrived one after the other, in the same sub-series.
Thus, the victim, Industriales, is left alone as the one who lost the most games in such a humiliating way (7).
This may seem moot because it only took Geonel 15 strikeouts (seven outs) to sign a second perfect game, but our rules allow early detection of collisions, and this confirms his flawless performance on Monday.
The previous one was by Maels Rodríguez in nine innings against Las Tunas on December 22, 1999, when Los Gallos won a memorable match 1-0 at José Antonio Huelga, according to Benigno Daquinta’s stat files.
It’s the second goalless strike for Geonel, zero runs on his resume, and both matches ended ahead of schedule. On September 7, 2018, there was a 10–0 victory over Santiago de Cuba on Guillermon Moncada, with no one going into the draw due to being unstoppable for seven episodes.
He is the fifth pitcher with a pair of zeros, along with Maels Rodriguez, Aquino Abreu, Rogelio Garcia and Freddy Asiel Alvarez, all behind Juan Pérez Pérez (3).
There have been 63 no-nos collected in the history of Cuban championships and if the Blues have lost the most games by super knockout, now they are also the ones who have lost the most times without getting hit or run. (6).
