Cubans open with victory in U-21 Pan American Cup in volleyball

The Cuban women’s U-21 volleyball team started with a resounding success with a 3-0 score against Belize their participation in the Pan American Category Cup, which is hosted by the city of Nogales, Mexico, from 24 to 29 May.

The girls under coach Wilfredo Robinson dominated the Belizeans with partials 25-14, 25-12 and 25-18 against whom they were superior in attack (40-21), blocking (10-4) and errors (7-14), and improved in the service (4-7).

For the Greater Antilles, the most prominent was Lisania Grafort, with 18 points (one block and two aces). Also starring were Claudia Tarin (10; ), Yalaine de la Peña (8; two blocks), Edysleidis Reyes (8; three blocks) and Yancy Kindelan (6; three blocks).

“Our team just met because five players are playing overseas, it was our first game together and it was supposed to make a connection between us, I think it was a good game under the circumstances, including the difficulties of being to get here. We’re going to find the best rhythm as the tournament progresses,” said Hitney James, the island’s captain.

For his part, Robinson regarded his pupils’ performance as a good start in Group A of the tournament, where the locals also won, beating Puerto Rico (25-18, 25-20 and 25-21).

“I expected more from them because they can give more power in the block and on the serve. On offense they were quite strong and the reception did not fail, despite the fact that the opponent made a spectacular serve. This match forces us to take the ice out of Game 1 so we can get into Game 2 with more confidence.”

Tonight, the Cubans will face the representative of Mexico, and the Puerto Ricans and the Belizeans will play each other in the morning.

Meanwhile, in Group B, the US and the Dominican Republic opened with smiles in straight sets against Guatemala (25-8, 25-13 and 25-14) and Costa Rica (25-20 and a 25-17 double) respectively. . . .

On the second day, the Guatemalans will cross paths with Tikas, and Norteñas and Quisqueyanas will surely put on another great show.
