Cuban staff of the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Emergency and Serious Epidemic Doctors are already in Turkey to help save lives and assist in the recovery of the victims of the devastating earthquake that affected the population of that country and Syria.
One member of the team of 32 is Dr. Ruber Ortiz Legra, a specialist in comprehensive general medicine (MGI) with a diploma in intensive care and adult care, who told the Cuban News Agency (ACN) that this was his third international mission.
In 2013, he was in Venezuela, and in 2020 he was part of the brigade of the Henry Riva contingent, which provided assistance to the population of Azerbaijan in the fight against COVID-19, he specified at the Central Medical Cooperation Unit before traveling to the Turkish nation.
According to him, upon arrival in Azerbaijan, the impact was huge, mainly because it was a different culture and language, but we Cubans knew how to cope with this task and join the work of its professionals.
He assured that for a doctor from Matanzas, this experience will contribute to better work in Turkey, where the name of Cuba and its medicine will once again become famous.
Jordis Lazaro Medero Batista, an MGI specialist with a degree in adult intensive care and emergency care, told ACN that being part of Henry Riva’s contingent is one of the greatest pleasures for a revolutionary Cuban doctor in our time.
“Including one of their crews was a goal for me and now it is a dream come true. I hope to do my best in Turkey, a sister city that needs our help,” said a doctor from Mayabeke Province.
He noted that this is his first international mission, although he received a lot of training and feedback from the experience of his colleagues: “I just have to lift my chest and save lives.”
A powerful earthquake hit Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, followed by strong aftershocks that destroyed infrastructure and left thousands of people under the rubble.
Since its inception in 2005, the Henry Reeve Contingent has assisted communities affected by earthquakes in Pakistan (2005), Indonesia (2006), Peru (2007), China (2008), Haiti (2010), Chile ( 2010), Nepal (2015). ), Ecuador (2016) and Mexico (2017).
