WHO recognizes recent earthquakes as the largest regional disaster in a century

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday declared powerful earthquakes in Turkey and Syria the worst natural disaster in the Eurasian region in a century, the health authority said.

According to Hans Kluge, the organization’s regional director for Europe, the magnitude of the earthquakes is still being studied, as the real cost of the disasters caused is still being recorded, the capital’s television stressed.

However, Kluge warned that the number of victims of the earthquake in the coming days will double, as this is due to a more accurate assessment of the magnitude of the elements.

Local analysts estimate that the quake was Turkey’s worst natural disaster in 84 years, killing at least 35,418 people, injuring more than 105,500 and affecting 13 million people.
