ANKARA, 17 February. — The updated balance of deaths from the February 6 earthquake in Turkey and Syria this Friday is more than 41,000 people. According to official estimates, the United Nations has indicated that $1 billion is needed to address the growing general humanitarian crisis in the Middle East region.

Medical experts say people rarely survive more than 100 hours in the rubble; according to the CNN network, most are rescued in the first 24 hours. Rescue teams say they can still hear voices from the rubble more than a week after the devastating 7.8 earthquake, raising hope that more survivors will be found.

In addition to the tens of thousands of deaths, the quake struck thousands of buildings that were destroyed or seriously damaged, amounting to 84,000 people. In Turkey, Urban Minister Murat Kurum said more than 3 million apartments were inspected after the quake, and most of them were left in disrepair.

Eleven days after the earthquake, rescuers managed to extract a 17-year-old girl from the rubble. He looked in good health. His eyes blinked, said Ali Akdogan, the first aid miner.

Many in the affected areas are facing a parallel emergency of people trying to pack their belongings in the bitter cold, with no food, water or toilets, increasing the likelihood that the disaster will be aggravated by disease.

The needs are enormous, people are suffering and there is no time to waste, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned in a statement asking for funds to help those affected.
