Local sources specified that all the shootings took place in the village of Arkabutla with a population of less than 300 people, and the suspect has already been detained.
County Sheriff Brad Lance said part of the shooting took place inside a store where one person died, while the rest of the dead were found in two homes in and around the town.
The suspect was found inside the vehicle and detained, but reports remain unconfirmed.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves confirmed that the alleged perpetrator of the massacre is in custody and is believed to have acted alone.
According to the NBC News channel, the shots occurred around 12:30 local time in Arkabutla.
There have been 73 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Archives of Gun Violence.
