EU approves new package of unilateral measures against Russia

BRUSSELS, 25 February. The European Union (EU) approved this Saturday the tenth package of unilateral punitive measures against Russia, including a ban on the transit of its goods through that country and the blacklisting of 121 other institutions and individuals, PL reports.

The restrictions also include the suspension of Russia Today’s Arabic service and Sputnik, all amid Western sanctions against Syria, whose government has been dealing with terrorist groups since 2011.

According to EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and International Security Josep Borrell, the tenth package of punitive measures also requires members of the bloc to report on the accounts of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation frozen in European banks.

On February 24, 2022, President Vladimir Putin ordered the start of a military operation in Ukraine to protect the population of the rebellious Donbass, subjected to an eight-year genocide by Kyiv, according to statements by the authorities in the area.

After the hostilities, the West unleashed an economic war against Russia, with more than 11,000 unilateral punitive actions that had a boomerang effect, especially for Europe, since they included a boycott of gas and oil purchases from Russia.

In this regard, the EU has also targeted organizations involved in the transfer and asylum of some 6,000 children out of nearly 2 million who chose to take refuge in Russia in the face of Ukraine’s offensive in Donbas in early February. 2022.

However, Borrell believes that the minors were part of an alleged forced deportation carried out by Russia, which his government categorically denies, recalling that the vast majority of the population of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics are Russian speakers.

Tatyana Maskalova, Commissioner for the Protection of Human Rights in Russia, also appears among the persons sanctioned in the above case.

During a recent speech before the two houses of the Federal Assembly, Putin recalled that in the past 12 months alone, the West has supplied Ukraine with weapons worth about $150 billion.
