A magnitude 5.2 quake sparked panic this Saturday in Nigde Province, about 350 kilometers from a region devastated earlier this month by a massive quake that killed more than 44,000 people, DW reported.

According to the Turkish press, telluric movement could be felt in several neighboring provinces, although there are no reports of possible damage.

Turkey’s Kandilli seismographic observatory has detected the earthquake’s epicenter in Bor, a municipality about ten kilometers southwest of the provincial capital of Nigde, a city of 230,000 in southern Cappadocia.

Earthquakes of magnitude 5 to 6 are relatively frequent in Turkey, where up to a dozen such tremors are recorded per year, and usually do not cause serious damage to homes or infrastructure.

More than 9,500 aftershocks followed the strong quakes on February 6, which is an emergency, although aftershocks are expected to continue for the next two years, Turkish emergency agency AFAD said in Ankara.
