Cuba’s Broad Agenda at the Doha Conference

DOHA, 5 March. Cuban Foreign Trade and Investment Minister Rodrigo Malmierca this Sunday met with representatives of several countries participating in the V Conference of the Least Developed Countries, PL reports.

The Cuban minister met with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration, Antonio Vitorino, with whom he discussed support for the island’s interim G77 + China presidency on issues such as climate change, science, technology and innovation, and sustainable development goals.

On the first day of the conference, Malmierca also exchanged with a delegation from the United Arab Emirates, led by Emir of Fujairah Hamad bin Mohamed al-Sharqi and Economy Minister Abdullah bin Tuk al-Marri.

The meeting, classified by the Caribbean countries as a friendly one, was dedicated to the potential for the development of bilateral economic relations and the United Arab Emirates’ support for the leadership of Cuba in the G77 + China.

Also with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, Le Thi Thu Hang, the representative of the island spoke in a brotherly way and recalled the upcoming celebration of the 50th anniversary of the visit of the historical leader of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro, to the south of the Indochina nation at the height of the war.

For his part, Thu Hang pledged full support for Cuba’s actions at the head of the G77 + China, just as Honduran planning minister Ricardo Salgado did.

Malmierca and Honduras also considered bilateral cooperation on issues such as education, health and sports.

This Sunday saw the opening of the Fifth Least Developed Countries Conference, which was attended by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, recalled that the event is taking place in the midst of dangerous challenges for the world, as a result of new international conflicts, a food security crisis, climate change and the continuation of some of the consequences of Covid-19.

“We will have to focus on these issues as we plan for the future of our cities,” he warned.
