Cuba bill to lift blockade submitted to US Senate

Democratic Senators Amy Klobuchar, Chris Murphy and Elizabeth Warren, and Republicans Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, have again introduced a bipartisan bill to Congress to lift the blockade that successive US administrations have imposed on Cuba for more than 60 years, Prensa Latina reports.

According to a statement posted on Klobuchar’s official website, the Cuban Export Freedom Act will create new economic opportunities for American companies and farmers by increasing exports and increasing Cubans’ access to northern products.

“I have long pushed for reforming our relationship with Cuba, which for decades has been defined by past conflicts rather than looking to the future,” Klobuchar said.

The Democratic senator from Minnesota said that by ending the lockdown once and for all, the bipartisan legislation would turn the page on failed lockdown policies, while creating a new export market and creating economic business opportunities.

Moran, a Republican senator from Kansas, believed that Cuba’s one-sided siege was preventing northern farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers from selling at a market just 90 miles away while foreign competitors profited.

“The time has come to amend our own laws to give American manufacturers fair market access for Cuban consumers,” he said.

“It is time for us to normalize relations with Cuba. This rule takes important steps to remove barriers to trade and relations between the two countries and moves us in the right direction by expanding economic opportunities for Americans and Cubans,” said Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren.

The Cuban Export Freedom Act would remove legal restrictions on trade, including the original 1961 authorization to impose a blockade; subsequent laws strengthening its application and other legislation prohibiting relations between companies from the United States and Cuba, as well as restrictions on direct shipping between the ports of both countries, the statement said.

The document states that the US International Trade Commission has found that if trade restrictions are lifted, exports of products such as wheat, rice, corn and soybeans could increase by 166 percent in five years to a total of about $800 million.
