The Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School (IGEPN) of Ecuador and the Pasto Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (OVSP) of the Geological Survey of Colombia (SGC) recorded a seismic swarm on the border of the two countries, local media reported.
The phenomenon occurs in the area where the Chiles Cerro Negro (CVCCN) volcanic complex is located, located on a common border, clarifies RT. Thus, earthquakes mostly correspond to volcanic-tectonic events with important very low frequency (VLP) components that are associated with fluid migration, explains the Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute.
The site has recorded at least 4,500 earthquakes since Thursday, according to those organizations. The frequency of seismicity is about 200 events per hour.
The strongest earthquake recorded in the area had a magnitude of 3.4 and occurred at 20:10. [hora local] Thursday and it was noticeable.
In previous cases, as specialized organizations point out, these swarms have been associated with events of significant magnitude capable of causing damage, especially in vulnerable buildings.
