Xi Jinping arrives on an official visit to Russia

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Russia on Monday for a two-day official visit, during which it is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation, review the regional and international panorama and agree on positions on global challenges, Prensa Latina reports.

This is the senior official’s first trip abroad since he was re-elected this month, and official talks with his host counterpart Vladimir Putin are on the agenda.

As reported, Xi and Putin will seek to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries, deepen interaction in the international arena and sign new agreements.

The two dignitaries spoke last September in the context of a regional summit in Uzbekistan.

Xi then reaffirmed that China is willing to work with Russia and maintain “strong support” on issues of concern to each side, and expressed his willingness to deepen pragmatic cooperation in trade, agriculture and communications.

But at the same time, he considered it necessary to unite efforts to protect the security and common interests of the region, developing countries and emerging markets.

In addition, he called on China and Russia to strengthen coordination in the context of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the BRICS group and other multilateral mechanisms in order to build solidarity and trust.

Commenting on Xi’s trip, Chinese Ambassador to Moscow Zhang Hanhui said it was very important for the two countries to take their ties to a higher level in the face of today’s global turmoil.

He stressed that bilateral trade reached a record high of more than $190 billion in 2022, with hydrocarbons, electromechanical products and automobiles being the main commodities.

He also predicted that the visit would be an important milestone in relations between Beijing and Moscow and give new impetus.
