With the support of the Cuban Academy of Sciences (ACC) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a seminar was held in Havana on the future of scientific cooperation between the United States and Cuba.
According to the Cuban News Agency (ACN), the two-day meeting discussed key issues that could involve the scientific communities of both countries and establish long-term cooperation ties.
Experts interviewed by the ACN added that the agenda included issues related to health and environmental protection, mainly communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as marine protected areas.
The US delegation was led by Sudeep Parikh and Gilda Barabino, CEO and President of AAAS respectively; and Cuban PhD Luis Velazquez Pérez, President of the ACC, accompanied by members of its board of directors, scientists and experts.
It was also attended by representatives of federal agencies associated with US research, non-governmental organizations based in the country, and 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner Peter Agre, who is also an ACC Corresponding Research Fellow.
ACN reports that the discussions took place in a professional environment, with the presentation of high-level scientific papers, the exchange of views and proposals that open up new opportunities for mutual cooperation.
