Brazil will officially return to the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), as established by Decree 11,475 of that country’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, issued this Thursday, by which he ratifies the founding treaty of said organization, signed in Brasilia. (capital) May 23, 2008, according to Telesur.
According to a presidential decree, the reincorporation in the external field will come into force on May 6, 2023, although it will take place during the summit of the heads of state of the region, which will be held in the Brazilian capital at the end of next year. Maybe.
The resumption of Brazil’s participation in this body was one of Lula’s campaign proposals, which has always advocated political union and cooperation among the countries of the region.
By decision of former President Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil formally withdrew from the bloc in April 2019. Experts believe that the return will now be simple, as it only implies the abolition of the decree by which Bolsonaro announced such a move.
After Brazil’s withdrawal, other states ruled by right-wing presidents at the time left Unasura, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Unasur bases its management mainly on the areas of healthcare and infrastructure. With this association, the President of Brazil intends to place action against climate change at the center of the organization’s goals.
Unasura’s goal is to “promote integration between the countries of South America”, the integration of MERCOSUR and the Andean Community “outside the economic sphere”, to achieve “social, cultural, scientific, technological and political integration”, the Brazilian government specified in a press release. . Unasur has been paralyzed by not being able to elect a new general secretary since 2017 to replace Colombian Ernesto Samper.
With its reintegration, “Brazil reaffirms its commitment to the consolidation of South America as a zone of peace and cooperation,” Lula’s foreign ministry said.
This Thursday, Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero confirmed the country’s official return to Unasur as a member state on the orders of President Alberto Fernandez.
The Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the decision aims to “promote the institutional renaissance (Unasura) and build an increasingly integrated region.”
