Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today will begin the program of his official visit to Cuba as part of a tour of Latin America, which also includes Venezuela, Brazil and Nicaragua.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry on Twitter, Lavrov arrived this Sunday evening at the José Marti International Airport in Havana, where he was received by Angel Villa Hernandez, Director of Bilateral Relations of the Cuban Foreign Ministry (Minrex).

As part of the eighth visit to Cuba by the Russian Foreign Minister since his appointment to this post, he is expected to hold meetings with the President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel, and with his local counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to his website.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov’s Latin American tour is aimed at developing mutually beneficial cooperation in the political, trade, economic, educational, humanitarian, cultural and other fields.

“For us, Latin America and the Caribbean have their value in our foreign policy. We do not want your region to become a battlefield between powers. We are ready to further develop diverse contacts at the level of heads of state and government, parliaments, diplomatic services and other ministries and departments,” Lavrov wrote before starting his visit to the region.
