Political, social, trade union and cultural organizations from Latin America and Europe launched a platform this Wednesday in Brussels to host the People’s Summit for a Fairer World in July in that city, reports PL.
The forum will be held on July 17 and 18 in parallel with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) and European Union (EU) summit to ensure that the aspirations of political forces and movements are heard and build an alternative development model.
At the meeting held in this capital, leaders and representatives of various organizations also set goals in their call to facilitate the discussion of current global issues, the exchange of experience in the struggle and the strengthening of ties between actors on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
For MEP Manu Pineda, the People’s Summit will be a space to defend sovereignty and peace versus what he saw as a side event with two opposing views of the world.
On the one hand, the EU, subordinate in foreign policy and willing to follow the militarism of the US, a decadent empire, but with a great capacity to cause damage, and on the other, CELAC, composed mainly of progressive countries, committed to a multipolar planet and peace, said an MP from the Group of the Left in the European Chamber.
Also Alejandro Rusconi on behalf of the Sao Paulo Forum; David Adler, coordinator of Progressive International; and Cristina Faciaben of the Spanish Confederation of Trade Unions of Workers’ Commissions highlighted the opportunity to be part of the platform.
In this sense, they mentioned the need to raise their voice against neo-liberalism and for respect for people and the planet above commercial interests.
Regarding the People’s Forum on 17 and 18 July in Brussels, the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), the solidarity association Cubanismo.be, the Coordinator of Latin America in Belgium also expressed their hope for working together on diversity. The European branch of the peoples of Colombia and the Belgian coordinator against the blockade of Cuba.
For her part, the Vice President of the European Left Party, Maite Mola, advocated choosing a path of collective leadership and working together to ensure the success of the alternative meeting, which will include a final declaration.
According to the organizers, the People’s Summit will not only be a space to fight for a better world, but also a forum for strengthening cultural ties between Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.
With regard to the call and program, they emphasized the intention to enrich them in the coming weeks.
