Biden government approves sending 1,500 troops to Mexican border

WASHINGTON, May 2. — The Joe Biden administration has approved the dispatch of 1,500 troops to the US-Mexico border in the coming days, given the uncertainty that hundreds of immigrants could enter the country after the repeal of Section 42, a policy that, with the justification of the COVID-19 pandemic, allowed an accelerated expulsion of people from the North American countries.

“The president has used the tools at his disposal to prepare for the repeal of Section 42,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday, confirming the dispatch of 1,500 active duty troops to the south border.

According to White House sources cited by Fox News, the uniformed men will come from different military units and will serve for 90 days, mostly performing administrative and transportation functions. This deployment will be similar to the one ordered by Donald Trump during his presidency.

Section 42 will end on May 11 at 11:59 p.m. local time. But that won’t mean “the border is open,” the State Department explained in a memo released last week, alleging that at that point, “the US. The US will again use Section 8 to quickly process and remove people who enter the border illegally.”

In addition, before the end of Section 42, the US announced new measures to ensure regular, orderly and safe migration, which will include Guatemala, Colombia, Mexico, Canada and Spain, RT reports.

Guatemala and Colombia, for example, will launch Regional Processing Centers (RPCs), sites for processing asylum applications, work permits and family reunification.

These RPCs, according to the State Department, will help “reduce illegal migration and facilitate safe, orderly, humane and legal pathways.”

Similarly, the governments of Canada and Spain have also agreed to accept migrants sent from these centers.

Telesur, in turn, quoted Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador when asked about Biden’s decision to send additional troops to the common border in the face of an expected migration flow due to the upcoming end of Section 42.

According to the President of Mexico, “this is part of their powers, this is an independent, sovereign government, they make these decisions, and we respect them,” he said.

A total of 2,450 National Guard troops are currently stationed on the border with Mexico on missions of detection and surveillance, intelligence analysis and air support, according to Northcomm, according to Telesur.

The additional deployment is in response to a direct request from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which is forecasting a surge in migrant arrivals, especially from Central America, in the wake of the public health emergency due to COVID and Section 42 as of May 11.

The region is facing an unprecedented migration flow, with the United States intercepting more than 2.76 million undocumented immigrants at the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.
