G77 culture ministers meet in Cuba

Ministers and senior officials from the cultural sector of the Group of 77 countries plus China will meet this Thursday at the convention center in the capital.

At the opening of the event, the head of Cuban culture, Alpidio Alonso, from the country that currently leads the organization, is scheduled to speak.

A recorded address by Ernesto Renato Ottone, Deputy Director-General for Culture of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will also be broadcast.

In addition, the words of the director of the UNESCO World Heritage Center Lazar Assomo, who is taking part in the first International Congress of Cultural Heritage in Havana, are expected. One of the topics to be discussed at the plenary session will be culture as a global public good, as well as mechanisms for South-South cooperation and alternatives for sustainable development.

Other highlights will focus on the social and economic dimension of culture, and the role of creative economies and cultural industries in developing countries. The third thematic axis will focus on the integrated management of cultural heritage and the contribution of tourism in this area to sustainable development in less developed countries.

At the previous organizational meeting, Ana Margarita Morejón, director of international relations at the Cuban Ministry of Culture, indicated that the meeting is expected to adopt a final declaration aimed at concrete actions to promote culture and its multilateral communication, PL reports.
