Nearly 110,000 drug overdose deaths reported in US

WASHINGTON, May 18. The recently released figures showing nearly 110,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2022 provide overwhelming evidence of the harm that fentanyl use causes today.

Synthetic opioids killed about 75,000 people last year, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while other addictive substances, such as the veterinary tranquilizer xylazine, increase the risk of their use.

According to PL, the preliminary count of 109,680 overdose deaths was only slightly higher than the figure for 2021, when 109,179 people died, according to data released by the organization.

The death rate from this cause has increased significantly compared to last year, as well as the previous one, with an increase of almost 17 percent in 2021 and 30 percent in 2020.

In an article in The New York Times, the death toll estimate is another sign that the country’s efforts to make amends for increasingly complex and deadly drugs are still far from over.

According to the text, overdoses have contributed to a decline in life expectancy in the United States and are one of the leading causes of death in the country.

He added that since the 1970s, the number of deaths from this cause has been growing every year, with the exception of 2018.

The surge in 2020 and 2021 “was mainly driven by the availability of fentanyl in many parts of the country,” explained Dr. Wilson M. Compton, associate director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is part of the Citizens Health Institute.

For his part, Dr. Daniel Ciccarone, a professor of family and community medicine at the University of California, warned of a continuing trend of death among uninformed people taking counterfeit fentanyl-laced pills.

Officials warned that the number of overdose deaths in 2022 was an estimate and could change as the government reviews more government records.
