MADRID, 29 May. — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced early general elections for July 23 next year, after the negative results of his bench in the regional and municipal elections held on Sunday, the 28th, which showed a marked advantage of correct.

“The best thing is that Spanish men and women take the floor and speak out without delay to decide the future of the country,” Sanchez said in an institutional statement from the Palacio de la Moncloa, when he personally admitted defeat in the PSOE elections.

In turn, he indicated that he held a position with King Philip VI, in which he conveyed a call on Monday afternoon to the Council of Ministers and to dissolve the Cortes Generales in order to proceed with the elections to be published on Tuesday. .

At this meeting, the Council of Ministers approved a decree dissolving the Cortes and scheduling a general election for 23 July.

The Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) has lost 15 of the 22 provincial capitals it governs, including Seville, Valladolid, Castellón and Palma, as well as six of the nine autonomous communities.

In major cities other than Barcelona, ​​the PP has won, according to press reports, and far-right Vox has tripled its councilors compared to the last elections, which took place in 2019.

“The first consequence of these results will be that great regional presidents, socialist mayors and mayors will be removed with impeccable management, and this despite the fact that many of them saw their support increase yesterday,” said Pedro Sánchez. according to Telesur.

In this sense, he stressed that the second consequence would be that numerous institutions would be run by a new majority consisting of the People’s Party (PP, right) and the far-right formation Vox.

“Spain is about to emerge from the crisis phase caused by the COVID-19 emergency, as well as the war in Ukraine, we are on a clear path for growth, job creation and social cohesion,” he said.

Similarly, Sánchez emphasized that the Iberian nation is preparing to fulfill “a very important duty as President of the Council of the European Union”.

“All these reasons require clarification of the will of the Spanish men and women, the policies that the government of the country should apply, and the political forces that should lead this phase,” he stressed.

On this basis, the next general election will be the first to take place in the summer, because there has never been an election for the Spanish Congress and Senate in the middle of the summer period.

On Sunday, when he voted for the first time in Madrid, since he is from Galicia, the leader of the People’s Party, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, asked the public what he called “clear voting that leads to strong governments.” and defended his thesis that the list with the largest number of votes should be allowed to govern, and not the rule of the “losers’ pact”, as he called the coalition that has led the government so far.
