This Wednesday, the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) expressed its solidarity with Cuban poet and 2001 National Literary Prize winner Nancy Morejón following a recent slanderous attack on the writer at the gates of the Poetry Market. France, from 7 to 12 June.

“Those who join those who hate and lift the pressure on the organizers of the event to have Nancy stripped of the status of honorary president of the appointment, an inauguration with which they paid tribute to the work of international resonance. To achieve its goal, the French Pen Club and some of its followers turned to hackneyed platitudes in attacking the artists and intellectuals who live and work among us, who do not forgive their loyalty and devotion to their people and culture, ”he said. at a press conference by Alberto Marrero, president of the Uneac Writers Association.

The statement concludes: “Cuban writers and artists reject any attempt to disqualify Nancy’s poetic and human trajectory and express our solidarity support for the outstanding Cuban creator.”

Uneac’s statement was also backed by Culture Minister Alpidio Alonso Grau, who ruled that “they cannot silence the truth of his voice or belittle the moral authority of his example.”

Similarly, the World Poetry Movement, of which Nancy Morejon is a prominent member, has declared its unconditional support for the Cuban poet. “Culture is the soul of nations. Culture is the spirit that supports nations in building a better destiny for their children. Let’s protect Nancy Morejon from the barbarism and mediocrity that some want to turn into a global narrative. Nancy Morejon is today the Cuban culture, the Cuban nation.”
