Cuban Arley Calderon won a pair of bronze medals in the 61 kg weight category, giving Cuba seventh and eighth medals on the third day of the Havana Weightlifting Grand Prix.
In the tournament, which also awards Olympic ranking points ahead of the Paris 2024 competition, the Pinar del Río native had a warm start, reaching 125kg in the snatch. However, he scored 161 points in the clean and jerk, which, in addition to being a new national record, allowed him to finish third in that event, as well as in total with a total weight of 286 kg.
Following this result, Calderón, who was eleventh at the last World Cup, is now in ninth place in the world rankings as he has qualified for the Olympics so far.
Thus, Calderón has now entered the qualification zone for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with ninth place after finishing in eleventh place at the World Championships last December.
The weight category was dominated by Rico Saputra from Indonesia (134–161–295 kg). Hampton Morris took silver in the clean and jerk and total (166-290 kg), while Belarusian Gennady Laptsev, who competed as a neutral, reached the interim title in the snatch (130 kg).
This Sunday the men will compete in the 67 and 73 kg weight categories. Reidiel Herrera will represent Cuba in the first of these divisions.
