Local media reports that a shipwreck this Sunday off the coast of Crotone in southern Italy’s Calabria region has killed 62 people and rescued 81 people so far.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, 14 minors, including several children and a newborn, and 33 women are among the registered dead so far.
Of the survivors, 19 were hospitalized and the rest were transferred to a reception center in the nearby town of Isola di Capo Rizutt, local sources said.
The Italian parliament approved a few days ago a new migration decree prepared by the Meloni government that makes it difficult to rescue NGO ships operating in the Central Mediterranean, the most dangerous route for migrants.
