DENVER, USA, March 22 – Two teachers were shot at a Denver high school on Wednesday and then fled the scene, sparking a citywide search for their whereabouts, according to high school officials.
The shooting at East High School was reported around 9:50 a.m., and police and medical personnel arrived at the scene “very quickly” and found two adult men with gunshot wounds, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said, according to CNN.
One of the victims is in stable condition, the other is in critical condition.
The student suspected of shooting was under the age of 18 and was in the school’s so-called security plan, where he was searched every day, according to a police officer.
During a search on Wednesday, a handgun was seized and multiple shots fired in an office area in front of the school, away from other students and staff, he said. After that, the student ran away from the school, and his whereabouts are sought. According to Thomas, no weapons were found.
In turn, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock confirmed that they were looking for the suspect and added: “We will find this suspect and hold him accountable for his actions this morning that put everyone in danger and certainly injured two employees. that they were doing their job and trying to keep everyone safe at the time.”
The mayor asked residents to keep an eye on the student, who was described as a young African American with an Afro hairstyle and an astronaut-themed hoodie.
The student should be considered “armed, dangerous and ready to use a weapon, as we learned this morning,” the mayor said. In addition, another student was admitted to the hospital with an allergic reaction, the mayor said. According to Hancock, paramedics were already in the building when the shooting occurred and were able to immediately treat the victims.
Located in the historic City Park district of Colorado’s capital, East High School has approximately 2,500 students in grades 9 through 12 and is the largest hub in the Denver public school system.
