WASHINGTON, April 4th. — New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Mercan has denied a request by various media outlets to broadcast the indictment against former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021) to be held in a Manhattan court today, PL reported.
“It cannot be argued that this impeachment raises an issue of monumental importance, since at no time in the history of the United States has any current or former president been charged with criminal charges. Trump’s indictment is generating unprecedented public interest and media attention,” the Justice of the Peace wrote.
But he added that the interests of news organizations in ensuring the widest possible access to hearings must be weighed against “conflicting interests.”
However, he agreed to allow five stationary photographers to take pictures of the former president and the front room before the hearing began, CNN reported.
Earlier Monday morning, Trump’s lawyers also urged the judge to deny the request for cameras in the courtroom.
The arraignment is a public hearing in Manhattan, but filming from the courthouse is generally prohibited.
This hearing will look at criminal charges against the former White House occupant that have not yet been made public but are allegedly related to a payment made during the 2016 election to buy the silence of the adult film star known as Stormy Daniels.
Daniels claims she had a brief sexual relationship with a businessman in 2006, but Trump denies any wrongdoing, according to The New York Times.
This is the first time in the history of the United States that a former leader of the nation has been charged in a criminal case.
The impeachment comes as Trump again seeks to run for the White House in 2024, leading by a wide margin in the nascent Republican nomination race, according to polls.
Other ongoing investigations are weighing on the tycoon, including his alleged attempts to invalidate the results of the 2020 election, his role in instigating the January 6 attack on Congressional headquarters and the discovery of classified documents at his Florida residence.
Some supporters of the former president have called demonstrations in New York, including a planned protest in Manhattan.
