A tender greeting, words marked by intimacy and naturalness, began this Friday afternoon from the Palace of the Revolution at a meeting that took place between the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz. – Canel Bermudez and Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission.
The President of Cuba told the man who arrived on the island this Wednesday on an official visit that he was very pleased to receive him as a high representative of the European Union. “We attach great importance to this visit,” the senior official said.
Diaz-Canel Bermudez told Josep Borrell that “such visits, which have a rich agenda, a broad program in various fields, allow us to get to know each other better.” And he stressed that such events make a great contribution to all the development that the implementation of the Agreement on Political Dialogue and Cooperation has, which has been working very intensively since 2017.
“We are very pleased with the moment when we implement this Agreement with the European Union,” said the head of state, who did not lose sight of the fact that whenever relations between Cuba and Europe are analyzed, historical ties and cultural ties between both parts ; which, according to him, “are a pillar that facilitates the present and future deepening of all our relations in various fields.”

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba assessed: “Today, both in the political-diplomatic field and in the field of cooperation, there is a path that is ordered and yields results; and I believe the potential for the future is enormous.”
He then acknowledged that the European Union understands the situation in which Cuba finds itself and how cooperation projects are supported.
These are projects, – Diaz-Canel stressed to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, – that “make a great contribution to the economic and social development of our country.”
In the same vein, the president wanted to recognize “the support that the European Union has given Cuba in the fight against the blockade” and the organization’s clear position that it rejects the inclusion of the Caribbean nation on the List of Countries Supporting Terrorism.

In connection with all of the above, President Diaz-Canel Bermudez commented to Josep Borrell Fontelles that the Cuban government attaches “great importance” to this visit: the relationship between Cuba and the European Union.”
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission then expressed the hope that, according to the Cuban President, this trip would be very positively received by the host government and Cuban society.
Borrell Fontelles reaffirmed his desire to further promote the implementation of the Agreement on Political Dialogue and Cooperation within the framework of the European Union, taking into account the specifics of each of its Member States. And he was categorical:
“I must make an effort to maintain the unity of all in the vote in the United Nations against the blockade, which we have achieved so far; and I must make an effort to make everyone understand that the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries that support terrorism is outrageous and has no justification.”

Before the start of the exchange at the Palace of the Revolution, Borrell Fontelles commented to the president on the busy day he had lived since his arrival in the Caribbean country. Also present at the meeting with him were Isabelle Brillante Pedrosa, Ambassador of the European Union to Cuba; Javier Niño Pérez, Deputy Director for the Americas, European External Action Service; Pelayo Castro Susuarregui, Senior Adviser to the High Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean; and Leonhard Kunzle, Joint Secretary of the Joint Council and member of the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union.
The Cuban side was represented by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba (Minrex) Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo; Angel Villa Hernandez, Acting Director General for Bilateral Relations; Director for Europe and Canada Minrex Gisela Garcia Rivera; and the Cuban Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium and to the European Union, Yaira Jiménez Roig.
