Kyiv, May 29. — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has asked his country’s parliament to pass a law imposing sanctions on Iran for 50 years, claiming he is helping Russia militarily.

According to the Kyiv Independent, the bill would completely ban trade with Iran, block Iranian investment, prevent the withdrawal of Iranian assets from Ukraine, and ban technology transfers to the Islamic Republic.

“The document has already been submitted for consideration by the heads of parliament and the National Security, Defense and Intelligence Committee,” state media outlet Ukrinform reported.

Ukrinform quotes the draft law: “Approve the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine dated May 27, 2023 “On the application of special economic sectoral measures (sanctions) and other restrictive measures against the Islamic Republic of Iran, enacted by Presidential Decree No. 308/2023 dated May 27, 2023 of the year”.

Zelenskiy’s bill comes after Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday that Russia had carried out its largest ever drone strike on Ukraine, using 54 Iranian-made drones, though Tehran denies having armed Russia with the drones.

Iran and Russia have expanded their economic and military ties in the face of similar pressure from the West, antiwar.com reports.

According to The Cradle, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani called Zelensky’s comments that Iran had crossed “to the dark side of history” “a useless political spectacle staged to force the United States and some European states to provide Kiev with additional military supplies.” equipment and financial assistance.
