National Humor Award 2012. Author: rebellious youth
In the center is Hector Zumbado, our first national humor award, an indispensable reference for anyone who wants to dedicate themselves to the cause of making people laugh and make them think. Zumbado knew how to critique Cuban society in the 70s and 80s with a sharp humorous scalpel (and with great courage), showing how good humor can improve society by questioning its flaws. what’s stopping you..
I borrowed words from Oswaldo Doimeadios (National Humor Award 2012) to say that Zumbado was the most bohemian, rebellious and opinionated Cuban humorist; not only because of the depth of his texts, the positions he took or the scope of his thought, but also because most of his writings appeared on the pages of Bohemia, rebellious youth and Opin’s magazine.
The range of topics he touched on is wide, but one can point out some of the goals of his photographs, which range from costume breeze to the sharpest satire, in abundance of grace, inventiveness and subtle irony.
Among them is the bureaucracyStaff request, Bureaucratized); mass media 🙁to yawn, Between cabbage and cabbage, chest); service inefficiencies (Crying for a change of shift, guaguabol); vices of social behaviorabsence, Creole decibels); stickiness (hack; Kitsch, kitsch, bang, bang) and love (pearl, love at first vintage).
To the right is Carlos Ruiz de la Tejera, also a National Humor Award winner and the main advocate for Zumbado’s work on stage. How not to remember his interpretation Bus, That manthe man who believed in the sun, Cafencuesta and other texts turned into monologues thanks to his acting talent.
The photo was taken by JAPE one day in October 2012 during a book launch. Zumbado, an anthology compiled of 69 of the Master’s most popular works. A tribute to his 80th birthday. A life that was physically cut short on June 6, 2016 and which today, seven years later, we remember with great love, admiration and respect.
