For 65 years, Cuba disagreed and looked for alternatives to traditional models of democracy; He has turned the page to the defenders of the illusion that national problems and crises can be solved through elections, and he seeks to make people feel the usefulness of politics in their daily lives.

Cuba has not departed from democracy, as many claim; He is in search of his own socialist project, truly popular in the style of Marty: with everyone and for everyone, which is the result of our socio-political reality and the historically unprecedented practice of exercising power.

Based on the constitutional order itself, Cubans are committed to a model of society adapted to our history, characteristics and modern realities, in which fair development and transformation with social justice is possible, as well as a harmonious combination of collective and individual interests. Let’s work for a country that promotes the development of citizens who are more economically productive, more involved in political governance, and more supportive in social matters. After this aspiration we go.

1st In May 1960, in the act and parade in honor of the Workers’ Day, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz defined the duty of the Cuban revolutionary democracy as the government of the majority, the fundamental pillar of which is the participation of citizens, the right of all to create a common cause. .

One of the most infamous faces of this involvement is undoubtedly the electoral process in Cuba. In Cuba, all citizens have the right to vote and be elected, and all representative bodies of government are elected and renewable.

Unlike what happens in many countries, the electoral system does without parties and openly leaves the nomination of its candidates for delegates to the population in case of municipal elections; and to its civil society, through mass and student organizations, the proposal of possible deputies to parliament.

Realizing that in any dispute between the parties, people are reduced; our only party doesn’t posit, and candidates don’t even have to be activists.

From the age of 16, all citizens have the right to vote everywhere, automatically and free of charge; the vote is free, equal and secret, and since there is no list of parties, you vote directly for the candidate you want.

Every five years, the highest organ of state power is elected: the National Assembly of People’s Power, an assembly similar to its people, which includes a worker, a peasant, a scientist and a private entrepreneur; students and women on equal terms contribute, approve and make proposals for social security.

As a representation of the people and an expression of their sovereign will, Parliament elects from among its deputies those who will be part of the Council of State – the structure that represents it between sessions – as well as the President and Vice President of the Republic. Cuban parliamentarians don’t earn a dime for it, they don’t invest millions to run or campaign, and they must be accountable for their work periodically.

On election days, the first thing the polling stations must show to those present are the ballot boxes, which will later be guarded by the pioneers, and after the adoption of the closing decree, the counting of votes becomes public.

Beyond elections, Cuban democracy seeks to legitimize itself day by day, giving everyone the opportunity to contribute, to participate; the same with the constant call to the public to submit their own criteria for the problems that affect us, even the most complex ones, with the possibility of further participation from all sections of society.

Civil society acquires, at least from a theoretical point of view, a leading role in decision-making and can become a real force of control and supervision over the rulers themselves; politeness sui generiscoming from the unity of people, based on social progress, protected by neighborhoods, microdistricts, rural settlements, schools and workplaces.

Following in the footsteps of the people are vital signs of Cuban democracy. It is the will of the people, expressed in various government structures, that has supported the country in its triumphs, and is also the source of those daily debts that, in the face of the future, challenge us as a society to constantly improve their legal norms, their mechanisms of participation.

In times of lofty dilemmas such as those in which we live, for example, the enthronement of the figure of a delegate in his due role; that those who represent us in parliament after the upcoming elections on March 26 remain really connected, beyond meetings at the convention center, with the problems and needs of the communities and sectors from which they come, or that those who lead in the municipalities , those who we are trying to put at the center of public administration, to make frank exchange with the people a systematic practice, are challenges in which the credibility of the kind of genuine democracy that we are trying to build depends on us.

In the rounds of candidates for deputies that are taking place these days around the country, the young proposal has identified the attraction of an increasing number of people to participate in the transformations we need as the biggest task for the National Assembly, which will soon be formed. Successfully overcoming such a challenge entails abandoning formalities, barricade speeches and rites of unanimity or lack of debate in the discussion of any analyzed issue; build consensus and use more tools such as popular control.

Only in this way will the nation be able to resist the attacks of the empire and together find innovative solutions to our problems. Defending Cuban inconsistency with our own ideas and beliefs also protects national sovereignty and the very existence of our nation.
