Cuban Ambassador to UNESCO Jáhima Esquivel today stressed her country’s readiness to develop cooperation in the field of education, science and culture during its interim presidency of the Group of 77 plus China, according to Prensa Latina.
Cuba intends to strengthen the work in the fields of competence of this organization: education, culture for sustainable development, science, technology and innovation, and put them at the center of the debate of the Group, he said in this capital.
Speaking at the handover ceremony from El Salvador to Palestine as chair of the UNESCO G-77 office plus China, the diplomat referred to specific actions taken or planned by the island during the 2023 exercise to lead the joint multilateral mechanism of 134 of the 193 UN Member States.
In this regard, he highlighted the meeting of education ministers organized last month in Havana, where participants agreed to promote consensus building, strengthen unity and promote South-South and triangular cooperation in this area of UNESCO’s mission.
As part of this priority, Cuba will host the G-77 and Chinese Ministers of Culture Forum from May 3 to 5, Esquivel said, a meeting that will allow discussion of cooperation in sectors such as the creative industries and heritage.
I believe that we can work on the head of UNESCO, taking into account the resolution that will be adopted at this meeting,” he said.
The ambassador of the Antillean nation also noted the summit of heads of state and government, scheduled for September, dedicated to science and technology.
According to him, he recalled that this year will be the General Conference of UNESCO, the governing body responsible for determining the policies and directions of the work of the multilateral organization.
On this path to the Conference, we propose to continue the tradition of action and renewal of commitments from the consultation mechanisms, including this Group of 77 plus China, he said.
Esquivel acknowledged El Salvador’s work as President of the Group of 77 UNESCO Chapter and wished success to Palestine, which today assumed this role.
For their part, Palestinian ambassadors Munir Anastas and El Salvadoran Lorena Sol de Pool highlighted the island’s work in its youthful governance of the Group, which brings together two-thirds of UN member states and covers 80 percent of the world’s population. .
In particular, the results of the meeting of education ministers held in Havana in February were mentioned.
Other heads of delegation to UNESCO also praised the work of the largest of the Antilles and its commitment to solidarity and South-South cooperation.
