WASHINGTON, 2 April. Donald Trump may face the possibility that he will no longer be able to run for President of the United States when he appears in a New York court next Tuesday.
The ultra-conservative Republican tycoon will face a seasoned judge who knows firsthand the orbit of the former head of the White House, comments CNN. Acting New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Mercan has already sentenced Allen Weisselberg, a close Trump confidant, to prison, presided over the Trump Organization’s tax fraud trial, and oversaw former adviser Steve Bannon’s criminal fraud case.
Analysts say Tuesday’s landmark Trump prosecution could be Merchan’s most high-profile case to date after a long career in state court.
The prosecution is likely to be a law enforcement show, the source said, with the former president fanning flames on social media over his views on Merchan.
Donald Trump remains in hiding in Florida until his imminent arrest on charges stemming from an investigation into a $130,000 payment to a former pornographic actress in 2016. After a New York grand jury voted to impeach him last Thursday, he will become the first former US president to face criminal charges.
Prosecutors have already learned that Trump’s then-lawyer Michael Cohen paid the actress a large sum in cash to keep her quiet about her relationship with the Republican leader, BBC reports. A woman named Stormy Daniels claims she had a relationship with Trump when he was married and was paid to keep quiet.
Trump is under investigation in other cases and still plans to run in the 2024 presidential election, so he denies all charges.
Details of the charges have yet to be released, but earlier this week Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office released a statement confirming Trump’s subpoena.
