Between April 11 and 13, 2002, the clock seemed to stop. There was no social media to ease the uncertainty. I learned about the coup in the corridor of the Communications Faculty of UG. One of the insufferable critics said almost at the top of his voice: “This one also resigned.”

The Internet worked at the speed of frozen whey, and only that TV at the door told us anything.

There was sadness and anger. Venezuela has never been indifferent to Cuba. Through Martí, a unique connection was established with Bolívar’s homeland, which Chávez brought to life with his unique and transparent charisma.

The voice of Maria Gabriela on our television and around the world showed that the game is not closed. We later learned that this was one of two master strokes by Fidel, movements that, together with the serenity, arrogance, dignity and courage of Chávez and popular mobilization, led to a turn of events.

The second, first step, was to suggest that he not blow himself up.

After many years, I think that our embassy in Caracas was inevitably besieged by the fascists in those days.

Faces of intolerance and hatred, on the one hand, and well-placed faces, on the other, had to be recorded in history. They knew what they were doing: they went to the diplomatic mission of the flagship Revolution, from which they hurt their eyes.

The return of Chavez was telluric. The images of those looks still tremble with tears of triumph, that “he’s back, he’s back, he’s back, he’s back…” and an embrace with Cabello, an embrace of victory and loyalty.

April 13 is also Cuban and is a real proof of how much principles and ideas can do and how much a mobilized people can do.

Venezuela will never remain indifferent to us, because Bolivar was born there, a reference to Martí, and Chavez, our best friend, came from there.
