BRAZIL, 17 April. — An interview with his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira marked the beginning of the visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to this country, from where he will continue his journey, which will also take him to Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. .

At a joint press conference, both holders discussed the situation in Ukraine and possible ways to resolve the conflict.

Brazil’s foreign minister said his government is ready to engage in a peaceful resolution of differences and reaffirmed a position supporting an early ceasefire, respect for humanitarian law and the restoration of a lasting peace, Telesur reported.

In this regard, Vieira recalled the statements of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva regarding the promotion of the formation of a group of friendly countries to mediate possible negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, LP noted.

In addition, Vieira spoke out against the unilateral punitive measures imposed against Russia, and recalled that these restrictions have a negative impact on the economies of many countries, including developing ones.

For his part, the Russian Foreign Minister thanked Brazil for a good understanding of the genesis of the situation and the intention to contribute to the search for ways to resolve this scenario.

“It is clear that we are interested in a speedy resolution of the Ukrainian conflict. We have several times explained in detail the reasons for what is happening and what goals we are pursuing in this regard,” Lavrov said.

The head of Russian diplomacy confirmed that these goals are to “guarantee the absence of any threat to the military security of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine”, as well as to “protect the life and legal rights of the Russian-speaking population in the east and south” of Ukraine.

During the exchange on the potential of the Brazilian and Russian strategic partnership, the ministers also discussed trade and investment, science and technology, environment, energy, defense, culture and education.

In this plan, a common interest in the peaceful use of the atom and space for the benefit of both countries was highlighted. They also discussed the importance of “the processes of political and economic integration in Latin America”.

Lavrov assured that “the talks were very useful and confirmed the mutual readiness to further strengthen our strategic partnership”, inviting Vieira to visit Russia.

Lavrov’s tour will last until the 21st of this month.

In a statement announcing the trip, the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the Latin American region is one of the learning centers of the multipolar world, and stated that Russia is interested in maintaining a dynamic dialogue with these countries, RT reports.

Lavrov’s trip to Cuba was announced by the Cuban Foreign Ministry through a note published on the Cubaminrex website, which states that he will arrive on April 19 and that during his stay the Russian Foreign Minister will hold talks with the Cuban authorities. and will carry out other activities of interest.
