Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was extradited this Saturday from the United States to his country of origin, where he will be tried for alleged crimes of money laundering, conspiracy and influence peddling.
US marshals transferred the former president (2001-2006), first from San Francisco, California, where he surrendered on Friday, to Los Angeles International Airport, from where he flew to Peru.
The Toledo is expected to arrive this Sunday morning at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Peru, where bailiffs will deliver it to representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the National Penitentiary Institute.
The media indicated that the former president arrived at the San Francisco air terminal in a wheelchair, driven by a plainclothes policeman.
Toledo wore a green jacket similar to the one he wore during his 2000 presidential campaign. He was also seen disheveled and with a blanket covering his arms.
Peruvian justice accuses the ex-president of receiving about $35 million in bribes from the construction company Odebrecht.
Prosecutors announced they would be asking Toledo to face 20 years and six months in prison for allegedly accepting a millionaire’s bribe to grant Brazil’s Odebrecht a concession to build an inter-ocean highway linking Peru with Brazil.
